Whenever people scoff at silent film as being boring or dry, I point them to this film or Paul Leni's The Man Who Laughs (1928).

Browning is my favorite director and, from what I've seen, The Unknown was really his zenith. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments on Chaney's emotional discovery that his amputation for the sake of love has all been for naught; it's incredibly powerful and probably one of the most beautiful examples of silent acting we have.

-CarolineAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856798792320939017.post-42434167784647429912011-01-09T17:55:25.798-08:002011-01-09T17:55:25.798-08:00I'd go a step further and say that only a sile...I'd go a step further and say that only a silent film could pull off this kind of movie!

Wow...one of your favorite films is "The Unknown."

You're my kind a gal!Nathanael Hoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08959797971471060052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856798792320939017.post-64510152411186079212011-01-09T16:24:06.344-08:002011-01-09T16:24:06.344-08:00Lovely review of one of my favorite movies. Only Browning and Chaney could have pulled this one off so successfully.

-CarolineAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3856798792320939017.post-24994062395891486352010-03-23T06:18:39.035-07:002010-03-23T06:18:39.035-07:00I know! This sounds like a plot straight out of the Twilight Zone or an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
